5 Day Sandakan Death March Trek & Hinterland Adventure

This short package is a combination of WWII Australian history where you will trek part of the gruelling Sandakan Death March route, followed by an adventure tour through rich agricultural land in the Padas basin in the Borneo hinterland.


The tour ends with old traditional train ride from Tenom to Beaufort on one of the last remaining trains in Sabah. The railway was built more than 100 years ago by the British to transport tobacco from the mountains to the ports. It is now used to transport the local Muruts ("hill people") between their homes and the city. You will pass the scenic Padas Gorge with spectacular views of the swift flowing river flanked by high hills and mountains. 


The package includes 4 nights accommodation in a mix of traditional long houses and farmstays, All meals, An experienced local guide, 4WD touring and a train journey across country. 

DAY 1: Kota Kinabalu Pick up ~ Trek Nabutan to Nalapak 10km

Pick up from your hotel in Kota Kinabalu at 8:00am and transfer to Kundasang to visit the War Memorial. After a tour around the memorial we continue to visit the Ranau POWs campsite before lunch at Sabah Tea Garden with a delicious English menu and stunning views across Sandakan Bay. At 1:30pm we begin our walk along the Sandakan Death March route from Kg NABUTAN to Kg NALAPAK (10km). Tonight we stay in the native Rungus longhouse rooms and enjoy a well deserved dinner together.

DAY 2: Trek Nalapak to Muruk 10km

We have breakfast at 7:00am, check out, and begin our trek along the Death March route from Nalapak to Muruk which is about 10km. Depending on level of fitness it should take about 4 hours. After the walk we stop for lunch and the visit the Ranau Last Campsite Memorial. In the afternoon we proceed through the Padas basin, reaching our destination for the evening, Padas Farmstay.

DAY 3: Tenom Agricultural Park and Coffee Plantation

Have a rest from walking today as we visit Tenom Agricultural Park situated on 200 hectares and boasts an array of educational and recreational activities such as; 400 species of native orchids, crops museum, ornamental garden, animal park and more. After this we visit Yit Foh coffee company to see how they make coffee from their local crop and get to sample some freshly brewed coffee. Return to Padas farm for a later afternoon eco farm walking tour to see how they grow and harvest their tropical crops.

DAY 4: Rundum Highlands and Murut Village

We depart the farmstay at 8:00am after breakfast and travel by 4x4 on an 30km off-road journey to Rundum Highland, where the "Rundum Rebellion" occurred in 1915. The Rundum Rebellion involved local Murut people fighting with the British for their rights. When we reach Rundum we visit a highlands vegetable farm then a short British Route track walk. In the late afternoon we return to the village and enjoy a traditional local dinner with the Murut villagers. Tonight we camp in a tent to experience the cold weather!

DAY 5: Train Ride back to Kota Kinabalu ~ End of Tour

After breakfast we leave the highlands behind by 4x4 and head back to the farmstay. Enjoy a refreshment and then transfer to the train station to take the 1:00pm old train across Padas Gorge to Beaufort. You will be met at Beaufort at 4:00pm and transferred back to your hotel in Kota Kinabalu.

The tour will end here.
