GENERAL INFORMATION
Moderate trek which does not require exhaustive physical training but a good level of fitness due to the elevation gain and possibility of altitude sickness.
Reopened by the Nepali Government following the 2015 earthquake, the trekking route has been changed and is now safer for trekkers.
Surviving families have worked incredibly hard to get back on their feet. Trekking trails are open once more, lodges have been rebuilt, and the valley can once again be visited. There are some incredibly painful sights and stories, of course – a huge fan of grey rock covers the area where the village once stood, and close-knit families lost many loved ones. But that is no reason to turn away, and the people of Langtang don’t want sympathy. They just want travellers to return, as they always had before.
PACKING
Besides the usual items be aware that your porters can carry only loads of up to 20-22kgs for 2 people (including their own luggage)
Hiking / Quick drying towel is recommended as teahouses do not provide towels
Warm / Wet gear as it can get cold at night and rain can occur at times (beanie, thermals, fleece, and poncho). Remember the mountains can be unpredictable
Hiking poles could be useful especially for downward journey
Head lamp is useful for when the power goes off
Sleeping bags, can be supplied locally, but you may prefer to bring your own
Keep the weight and bulk of your trek bag to a minimum by bringing clothes made from lightweight material.
For the trek all of your gear should be packed into plastic bags to protect it from the weather – dry clothes are essential for your comfort.
Non essential items can be left in Kathmandu for collection after the trek
BEST TIME
Peak season is March – May and September – December. This is when there is usually clear skies and mild temperatures
January – February are the coldest months with snow higher up the mountains especial in January
Rainy season is June – August and best avoided dues to possible landslides and leeches at lower altitudes
ALTITUDE SICKNESS
Langtang Trek involves a rapid gain of altitude (Syabrubesi at 1500 meters to Kyanjin at 3900 meters)
Tips for reducing risk
- Take it slow
- Drink enough water
- Diamox is a medicine that might help (but consult your Doctor beforehand)
- Only real cure is to go down to a lower latitude
It is important to be aware of the normal altitude symptoms that you may encounter BUT NOT worry about:
- Periods of sleeplessness
- Occasional loss of appetite
- Vivid, wild dreams at around 2500-3800m in altitude
- Unexpected momentary shortness of breath, day and night
- Periodic breathing that wakes you occasionally
- Blocked nose
- Dry cough
- Mild headache
PORTER AND GUIDE
Guides show you the way and can tell you more about the history and the culture of the places you visit
Porters will only carry your luggage. Despite their heavy burden they often walk far in front of you and might have reached the lodge when you are only midway.
